Mission Brief 018 – Your Inner Battery

September 16, 2025

Our mental clarity is directly tied to our energy. Yet energy isn’t a constant, it rises and falls depending on what we do, who we’re with, and how we take care of ourselves. Some activities recharge us, while others quietly drain our reserves. By paying attention to these patterns through a simple “energy audit,” you can learn to protect your focus and resilience. This awareness lets you schedule demanding tasks when you’re at your best, limit unnecessary drains, and build a life that supports your well-being instead of working against it.

The brain may weigh only about 2% of your body, but it burns through roughly 20% of your daily energy. That’s why decision fatigue is real — even a few hours of nonstop focus can impair your judgment. Managing mental energy isn’t optional; it’s biology.

Awareness of your energy isn’t just about productivity — it’s about protecting your health and mindset. If you don’t manage your energy, something else will drain it for you. By being proactive, you can shift from reacting to burnout toward designing days that leave you both effective and restored.

This morning, I’m running on fumes. My dog woke me up in the middle of the night, and I’ve been emotionally stretched thin (worrying about family), and dealing with allergies while trying to limit coffee. Normally I’d try to just push through, but I noticed how foggy I felt. As an introvert, I know I recharge best when I have time alone. So instead of adding more noise or distractions, I chose two simple resets: hydrating and stepping outside by myself for fresh air. It didn’t erase the stress, but it gave me enough clarity to keep going. The reminder for me is that energy recovery isn’t one-size-fits-all — it’s about knowing what actually restores you.

Over the next 24 hours, adjust one thing to support your energy — take a walk, hydrate, step away from screens, or go outside. Then, track your energy with a simple + or – after each major activity or interaction. By the end of the day, you’ll see your biggest drains and your most reliable sources of renewal.

“Almost everything will work again if you unplug it for a few minutes… including you.” — Anne Lamott
